What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are medical devices and as such do not require a prescription. There are well over 300 different ones available and most of them are a biodegradable, non-animal, hyaluronic acid based implant. This is a clear gel similar to the hyaluronic acid found in the skin which keeps the skin hydrated and elastic. As time passes hyaluronic acid is gradually lost from the skin leading to fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal filler injections help to fill out and smooth away fine lines, wrinkles and scars on the face as well as adding volume. They can be used on the hands as well as the face.

Is the process complicated?

The procedure is very simple. For those patients who have not had the treatment before I undertake a consultation and allow a ‘cooling off’ period before treating. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (sugar-like substance) that has been used in medical procedures for over 20 years without major problems. However each product carries risks as well as benefits as these are carefully discussed.

How long does it take?

Treatment takes about twenty minutes although the whole treatment session allows for the application of a local anaesthetic cream. There are a series of injections with a very fine needle along the unwanted lines and the area is sculpted. The area is massaged to ensure a smooth finish.

Does it hurt?

Although some products now contain a local anesthetic, it is still best to numb the area first as well. You may feel it sting slightly as it is being injected using a very fine needle. Afterward, there is a slight temporary redness that soon settles down. The improvement looks very natural and is immediately visible.

How often will I need treatment?

Everyone’s skin is different, and a personal treatment plan needs to be worked out. A top-up twice a year is normal, though some people choose to have the treatment more often to ensure they are looking their best.

Is it risky?

All the products are single use, sterile and are administered by medical, dental or nurse practitioners. Minor side effects include slight redness and swelling at the injection site. These resolve in a few days.
